America Needs To Go To An A.A. Meeting

I’ll see you there

I read on the internet that the gravity on Phobos, one of Mars’s two small moons, is so weak that if I jumped on its surface, I would launch myself into space. I know I shouldn’t believe what I read online, but this describes how I’ve felt the past few days: adrift and afraid.

I’m afraid of Republicans and Democrats and the end of democracy and hate, great comets of hate streaking through the sky. I’m afraid of floating up into the cold and the darkness. The only thing that can survive in a vacuum is incoherent rage.

There was a time, long ago when I would have sat in that darkness alone and sucked down bottles of vodka until every star in the firmament stopped burning. That was then, though. I know what to do now. I have a different choice I can make. I want to tell you about it but, for the record, no pressure. This is a free country.

Whenever I feel like a spaceman tumbling out of control, I go to an A.A. meeting, and for a little while, at least, I am reminded that my heart is heavy with love and that my feet stand on solid ground. It’s not for everyone, I know, but if you tried it once, it wouldn’t hurt you.
